2012 Annual Meeting Impression
On Sunday July 8, 2012, Leech Lake Cottagers Association held their Annual Meeting.
The subjects included:
• Delinquent Dues Collection,
• Road Report & Future Issues,
• Culverts Replacement and Maintenance,
• Capital Contingency Fund and its Funding,
• Lake Stewardship Report,Water Quality & Issues
• Fish Stocking,
• Boating & Regulations,
• Dues Increase,
• Future Dues Levels,
All of the above subjects are important given that cottage owners have an investment in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Any missteps could impact that investment negatively. It is sad to report that only 28 cottages out of 122 (22.9%) were there in person or through proxy. So, 77% of cottage owners are entrusting their investment to the other 23% of cottage owners, some neighbours and others complete strangers.

I would have to say there are a lot of reasons why people don’t go to these meetings. It’s truly a complete waste of time, and nothing ever gets accomplished. The people running these meetings run them as if they were rulers of the world. All these meetings accomplish is arguments that never get solved. Why would I waste time on a Sunday to argue with someone? Leech Lake isn’t a condo and thus shouldn’t be run like one. People go to their cottage to relax and enjoy themselves, not argue with people who think they are better then others.
You clearly have no clue how these meetings work. We sometimes debate the issues at hand, and always have resolutions. As with anything, problems take time to solve, but that's what the meeting is for.
How would you suggest we decide how much the dues are? How would you suggest how we decide who to hire to maintain the road, and the scope of the work? How would you suggest we decide on lake stuardship issues, and solutions? Staying home? Perfect, I hope you do more of that! Brilliant..
You're lack of knowledge on how these things work is a bit embarrassing.
I'm happy to hear that someone with your attitude decided to stay home because you now have no say in the fate of my investment.
I guess arguing on the Internet is more fun than debating real concerns about real things in real life.

i agree these meetings are nothing but a joke the heads of committee do whatever they want and dont listen to anyone so why waste my time i bought on leech lake to enjoy my cottage not to listen to the dicators of this committee i am not taking part in the political crap they throw at everyone, get a life
How sad that we do not get the newsletter out in March or April. I got more information about loons then about anything happening to the road. If we truly got a say in anything then why is the winter road clearing costing 16000 dollars and why is that money not being spent on improving the roads. Why waste money on Lake stewardship when the road is pitiful. Why have we not gotten the minutes of the meeting it is now mid August.
There have recently been comments about wasting money on stewardship and about how committees do whatever they want without regard to what members want.
Firstly everything that the Stewards are doing on Leech Lake was requested in a survey conducted in the fall of 2011. 88% of survey respondents stated that water quality was the most important factor in quality of life on Leech Lake. All of the educational work and studies we have been doing this year relates to what members who responded to the survey requested. 70% of residents filled out the survey.
The most important property value determinant is the quality of the water in the lake. Stewardship spends only about $600 of member's money each year. I think it is money well spent.

I agree with some of the comments on the Annual General Meeting. The process is inherently undemocratic. A quorum is just 25 members. That means that just 13 members can vote in any motion they choose.
Personally, I believe that we should move toward conducting referenda for important issues such as constitution or dues changes. That could result in considerably better overall input, better decisions, and a much more democratic approach.
I regret not attending the past meeting...I was out of town and unfortunately unable to attend...I have read the minutes and the unfortunate follow-up comments. I will keep my opinion short since I did not attend and feel I shouldn't be able to criticize too much.
1. All contract work needs to be tendered with no less than 3 quotes. This is to keep all decision members honest(Let's face it.It's easy to give drinkin'buddies the contract)
2.(Not that we do)Members need not to attend far away educational conservation etc. based seminars etc. and charge all fees (plus alpha) to the assoc.. This is why assoc's hire outside professionals to conduct data findings & suggestions thereafter.
3.Road equals approx. 85% of fees..Let's try to keep the focus on this! develop a schedule, a Strategic Action Plan..What should be done annually, every two years, etc.
4. We need to develop a slush fund that will be used to pay for culvert replacement etc. (For the next few years dues will need to be raised to accomplish) But need to be smart about needs vs wants (and drinking buddies).
5.Delinquent accounts.I've been hearing about this for years..Can these funds be retrieved or not? If not then drop it. It will only poison the moral of those that are in good standings...
6. The survey was a little (very overwhelming) on such topics that make no sense. Please keep it simple and manageable for end result(s) that can be accomplished.
I have attended meetings in the past and unfortunately did not come out feeling it was worth the trouble> I see a number of ppl that are within a circle of "old time" friends that I hope have the best interest of the lake and our investment arguing with those that bring up valid points/ideas..
With such a large # of ppl. Concentrate on the road & stewardship. Let the city bylaws etc. conduct septic testing.
