Road Report February 26, 2010

Leech Lakers, a word of caution!

We currently have 2 inches of very heavy wet snow sitting on an ice base. It is now raining so the road is deteriorating thus very hard to navigate.

If you decide to come to your cottage this weekend, you must use extreme caution on the road. If you don't need to come up, then don't, there are always other weekends. You may get stuck and even a tow truck may not be able to help you out.

We were out doing the roads, the snow is way too heavy to throw, and the tractor is just chewing up the wet base and making it worse, so we need to wait for a freeze to clean it up.

Agreed, you guys are doing an excellent job with the road and the updates. I saw the big yellow Leon's truck on Friday and I couldn't believe it, I figured that they would be stuck at the lake intil spring. Both my brother and I came over the hill on snowmobiles and there it was, the front end of International coming up the hill. We sat with our jaws dropped thinking "are you friggin' kidding me ? ". Hopefully the cold weather comes and it tightens the road back up so that the damage can be repaired. Thanks again for the reports and I also agree with the guests parking at the turn-around, the area is big and lots of room unlike the narrow cottage road.

I disagree with anyone who says that a good job was done on the road. It was crap what went on for the past two winters. With letting the snow fall for a week before clearing it once a week or no wait once every three weeks sometimes. The plow operator should of been out every day it snowed keeping the roads cleared. And why is there not pickled sand on the road helping to clear up the mess. There were weeks where the road was packed down by snowmobilers as it had never been cleared. In fact roads were only cleared three times all of February. And on February 26 the snow plow operator just drove on the road with the blower and blade up and made a mess with the tread from his tires. It was not until Saturday the 27th in the afternoon that the plower actually came around and plowed the road. I checked the weather forecast for upnorth and wanted to come up for the march break yet I hear that there has not been any sand put down and I am wondering why. There is lots of people going to be up and yet from previous experience there are no cleared areas for cars to turn into when cars come towards each other so it will be mayhem. Why could the operator of the plow not cut out some driveways just a car length for safety. We should not come up and end up having to park our cars at the turnaround of which this past weekend there were several that had to do just that and walk in. Again why was it not cleared the road on Friday before we came up and why was it not sanded. This person being paid to maintain the winter roads is not doing his job.

Well Anonymous, disagree all you want, I was merely commenting on the conditions thus far being good. I did not go last weekend but the weekend before the roads were in good shape, however as mentioned a very large delivery truck shoe horned it's way down the road on Friday Feb 19th and it made a very nice mess, also a few cars tried to drive in and got stuck. In my 39 years going to the lake I never knew anyone to sand the road once, there were containers of sand placed along the road in various areas for people to use as needed but that was the extent of any "sanding". As far as any pull off areas to allow passing vehicles go I couldn't agree with you more, but be prepared to pay more for that and also be prepared for some tool to park in one or two from time to time. Regardless, you may or may not have a valid argument, I guess we'll see you and your comments at the annual meeting this summer !

I have read all the comments and I know that when I come up this weekend if I have any problems getting in and out on the road as it sounds like the roads are slippery and are not properly maintained as we pay for winter clearance and it is not being done. The cottage association could find themselves with a lawsuit on their hands. And Jason you are wrong as I have been up other winters and there has been sand put on the roads and there has always been pickled sand at the turnaround for spreading on the road. Well except for last year when beach sand was ordered instead of pickled sand.

Sorry to drag you fellow Leech Lakers on this road complaint, but due to this person not revealing his name, even though we have a very good idea who it is. This will have to do.

On the morning of Friday Febuary 26th we started doing the roads on the north side of the lake, this is the side we happen to live on. At around 9:30am the universal shaft on the snow blower snapped as a result of the heavy snow. At this time we tried to do the roads with just the grader blade, but this did not work, the snow just rolled up behind the tractor. At this time we new we had to get back to the cottage to make the repairs needed to finish the roads. Once back at the cottage the snow blower was torn apart. This meant taking out the front auger and fan blade to enable us to order the correct parts. We then phoned the John Deere dealer in Bracebridge for the availability of this part. It is at this point we panicked,we were told the part was not in stock and that it had to be ordered and would be in their office at 9:00am Saturday Febuary 27th. Ok, we thought, now what are we suppose to do, we cannot throw the snow and cannot grade it, so the best thing we could come up with was to drive around the lake twice for two good reason, one to pack down the roads, and the second was we were hoping we would get a bit of freeze over night. This way if any cottagers came up they would be able to get some traction driving on the road over our frozen tire(chain)tracks, we drove to the dealership and was waiting at their store before they opened to pick up the part, we returned home, did the repairs and back on the road at 11:00am, and at this time finished blowing the roads. So that is why, anonymous and our fellow cottagers seen me on the south side with the empty blower and the grader blade up. I really hope this matter has been cleared and put to rest..

If anyone has any questions or concerns or just wants to say hi, you can always call us directly at 705-645-8851 or drop in.
