Bell Tower Update
This post was the request of Larry Jacobs.
Update on Communications Tower
Proposal
I spoke with the Director of Real Estate
and Government Relations at Bell Mobility today. I asked about the status of the potential
application for a tower at Leech Lake.
Bell Mobility has no plans to place a tower anywhere in the service area
at this time.
And the company has no plans for the entire
area through at least the end of 2020, which is as far forward as the company
plans capital expenditures.
We had requested that Bell Mobility should
look at a location on Hwy 118 East which would have increased their potential
customer base fourfold but would negatively impact many fewer property
owners. No alternate site was researched
after our summary of research and property owner comments was received by the
Federal Minister.
There is exciting new technology emerging
called “Air Gig” which could render towers obsolete. This is being tested by AT&T and could be
the answer for under-serviced areas. The
technology may be commercial in about two years.
Reliable internet service is available at
Leech Lake through Xplornet. With the
exception of one ice storm, we have not had a service outage in more than two
years after satellite upgrades.

Well we received a letter today January 9, 2020 in regards to the proposed cell tower again. This time it looks like it is near pine lake road close to lake shore drive south. Apparently we are within 210 meters of it and that is why we received letter. Interested in hearing if other received the notice as well.

We also got the same letter, but it's not correct. ours also stated 210 meters, but the GPS coordinates put it at 900 meters from the nearest cottage on the lake (1300 meter from my dock), and it would not be visible from the lake at all. My personal opinion is to allow them without a fight to install it.
I think the "210 Meters" might be from the properly line that contains the cell tower (pine lake hunt camp). just a guess..
I think sometimes we should be careful what we ask for. I’m all for better internet/phone service at the cottage but a cell tower may prove to have been the least of our worries. This ‘exciting new technology’ as you call it may have more serious drawbacks that we can’t avoid once it is in place.
The following is an excerpt from an article titled “5G Air Gig: What is It and Should You Be Worried?” found on a website called “Children’s Health Defense”
AirGig is a new technology developed by AT&T to transfer Wi-Fi and wireless data over power lines using 4G LTE and 5G millimeter waves.
The AirGig technology aims to provide “ultra-fast” broadband Wi-Fi anywhere there are power lines, offering “last-mile wireless connectivity” without the need for deployment of any new fiber-to-the-home. As “last-mile” suggests, AT&T is framing its AirGig technology as a solution for extending wireless access to virtually everyone on the planet. It is currently be tested in Georgia.
What AT&T does not spell out in its glossy communications is that AirGig will make it impossible to escape exposure to wireless radiation, even in our homes. AirGig will saturate our environment—every inch of it—with close-proximity, high-intensity radiation.
The use of millimeter waves in a typical wireless configuration has limited range in comparison with equipment operating in other spectrum bands, but AT&T’s planned use of power line infrastructure as a “wave guide” for AirGig, will help extend the distance that millimeter-wave signals can travel.
At a “Smart Cities” talk by Atlanta’s City Attorney, who described how smart cities will promote the “well-being” of their residents. After the lecture, she was approached to discuss implications for human health. She admitted that no one has looked at the health effects of smart cities—and added that it is “not her job” to do so.
