Blog Administrator 2008

Hi Cottagers,

I have agreed to take on the administration duties of the blog from Don Hill. I am not an experienced blogger so this is “on the job” training.

Please send me your submissions at agreenwood@rogers.com and I will get the posted to the blog in a timely fashion.

We are located on South Lakeshore Rd. This is our 21st year at Leech Lake. We love our spot and try to take the minimum from the environment and enjoy watching Mother Nature weave her magic.

We made our first trip of the year on Sunday April 5th. It was a mild day with a brisk east wind. We used a neighbour’s driveway to park and then had to shovel a path through the waist high drift at our own driveway. We were surprised to see no snow on our roof and very little around the cottage. The lake ice was still very thick and our floating dock frozen solid in the ice. There was evidence that the resident otters had been using our dock in the winter. I later found a hole in the ice under our lake side deck area that the otters had used to access the lake to obtain their supply of food. As well we spotted a wild turkey in the neighbour’s yard.

The water seems to be high according to our informal gauge which probably means that the beavers have been active at the end of the lake.

It was a very relaxing day, however the next couple of visits will be busy getting cleaned up and the water running before the black flies make their assault.

Hello and Welcome, I don't think there is as big of an beaver issue as there was last year. Remember this year Bracebridge seen close to 17 feet of total snow fall, so all water levels are high right now. For those who are starting to come up on the weekends, be careful as to there is water on some parts of Fraserbourg rd. I seen the opp pulling a suv out of the swamp after hitting a flooded part of the road. The lake road right now is really soft and mucky and has lots of pot holes, so just take it easy....

out at the lake april 15, water is about normal for this time of year, esp with the snowfall we had this year! thought it would never stop......
was great to not have to trek through 4 feet of snow
hope everyone has a great summer at leech lake, but DO be careful on the lake road, is caving in in places

I am not sure how to use this blog but it is good to see new postings on it. We have yet to make a trip to the cottage and are looking forward to it - hopefully the snow is mostly gone now. I am curious about how the cottages faired for mice this year as last year was mild for so long they continued to reproduce and invaded many cottages in large numbers. Keep us posted on the condition of the road please.

road is not in very good condition, but is passable. lots of bumps and caved in sides. we were out this past weekend, trying to get an early start on spring clean up...i think the mice were as usual...
we saw the otter by greenwood's dock, it was playing and sliding around all over the place...one of those things that makes the lake a pleasant place to be...also saw the turkey, ducks, geese, and heard the loon from one of the other lakes....
ice is breaking up, lots of open areas and grey in the center

ice is all gone from the lake! we were out thurs and fri, cleaning up leaves and stuff. gorgeous days with no black flies (tho the stupid ones are starting, lol)

just another note....leech lake lost another of its long time residents this past week...Don Kelly was found by another long timer this past week....am sure everyone is familiar with 'Kelly's Hill".....the long stretch on the left side that used to be one of the major challenges during the winter until Russell, Reg, Karl, and the Kelly clan worked on it to make it straighter and safer!

Don will be missed.

Good thing we turned our water off after leaving this weekend - April 26,27 - hopefully the snow won't stay long. Still to early to leave water on without risking frozen pipes I guess. The road wasn't in too bad shape. Still water on the Fraserburg road in spots. Lots of sand making some of the twists and turns treacherous. The lake was as beautiful as ever and we got our gardens raked inspite of on and off rain all day Saturday. Sunday was nice but there were signs of the start of black flies.
