Danger on the Lake Ice

It seems there is a bubbler located in the east end of the lake that is keeping the ice from forming in that area. The cottage that is using the bubbler (to protect their dock) has a red light glowing from the control post on the water shore line. You can see the light easily in good weather.

The major concern is the area ice is unstable and you cannot actually see where the ice is not safe to walk on to where it is safe. There has been a couple of reports that some snowmobliers have found it by accident and were very lucky to get out of the area before sinking, or much worse.

THE LAKE IS NOT STAKED OR GUARDED leaving opportunity in any weather for someone to fall through the slush into the water. The police have been notified and I have been told they say it is not a police matter until someone falls in.

A couple of perminent residendent have offered to put signs up at the boat ramp and lake entrance to let everyone know the east end of the lake has open water, dangerous area. They and our association have no liablity in case of injury but I'm told the owners do. They have been contacted and I beleive they will take appropriate actions to safe guard the area effected.

    Hello Ken,

We will look at the installation of the bubbler when we are back this summer, and make changes to its position if it seems to be aimed at the wrong area, causing excess open water.

( we will contact some bubbler- dock people as to the correct installation ) Unfortunately we didn’t oversee the install and it was done after we’d returned at the end of the summer.

I have included some correspondence I had with the Muskoka Snowmobile Association. I was trying to clarify the safety issues and was sent the email in response. I wanted to forward it to the Association blog, but my limited computer skills have held me back. Perhaps you could let me know if Don Hill could be sent the correspondence.

Appreciate your time on these matters. It’s nice to have people dedicating spare time to help with issues that arise at the lake.

    Looking forward to the summer.

There is actually no trail that crosses your lake. If people are riding Leech lake, they are riding at there own risk and should not be riding near your dock (most people are aware that people do have the bubbler systems and will avoid docks due to that reason). As far as I am aware, you would not be liable. When people venture out on lakes to ride, they are taking risk. As there is no actual staked lake crossing within your area, there is no liability on you, as far as I am aware. You might want to call an insurance company to see if you could get further information.

    Hello,

Not sure if you could provide me with some information… We have a cottage on Leech Lake, Bracebridge. We live out of the country, and only use the cottage during the summer. When we bought the cottage 2 summers ago, we had a new steel dock installed, with a bubbler to prevent the dock freezing and twisting. It has come to our attention that this might pose a danger to snowmobiles. Do you have a site that might post such areas as ours, as a potential danger, one to avoid? We would like to take appropriate action to safeguard the area, but are unsure how to go about it. We have the red light system currently in use. How do I know if a snowmobile trail goes near our lakefront property? Are the lakes checked for open water and such issues posted on any sites.

I appreciate any help you could give us…
